What Is Indoor Air Pollution?

Indoor air pollution refers to the presence of harmful substances in the air within buildings and structures, which may pose health risks to occupants. Unlike outdoor air pollution, which is often associated with vehicle emissions and industrial activities, indoor air contaminants come from sources like household products, construction materials, and appliances.

Common pollutants include:

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): These gases are emitted from a wide array of household products and building materials, such as paints, cleaning supplies, and even furniture. VOCs can cause a range of health issues, including eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, and, in some cases, damage to the liver, kidneys, and nervous system.
  • Particulate matter: These tiny particles, which include dust, dirt, pollen, and soot, can easily become airborne and inhaled. Particulate matter can irritate the lungs and exacerbate conditions like asthma and allergies.
  • Mold: Mold flourishes in moist environments like basements, bathrooms, and places with water leaks. It releases spores into the air, which can cause allergic reactions, respiratory infections, and numerous other health issues in vulnerable individuals.
  • Dust mites: These microscopic creatures live in bedding, carpets, and upholstered furniture and feed on dead skin cells. Their droppings and body fragments are common allergens that can cause sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, and asthma flare-ups.

While the reality of what is lurking in the air you breathe may be alarming, you can take proactive steps to mitigate these risks with effective air filtration, regular maintenance of your heating and cooling systems, and keeping your dryer vents and ducts clean

Signs of Low Indoor Air Quality

Understanding the signs of poor air quality within your home is the first step towards taking control of your indoor environment and creating a healthier home.

While some signs may be obvious, others are subtle and can easily be overlooked, such as:

  • Increased allergies and respiratory issues: If you or your loved ones experience persistent allergy symptoms, unexplained coughing, or other respiratory issues while at home, it could be a sign of elevated indoor pollutants that require immediate action to protect your family's health.
  • Unpleasant odours: Persistent musty odours, unpleasant smells, or other unusual scents in your home can indicate the presence of mould, stagnant air, or other harmful contaminants that can jeopardize your indoor air quality.
  • Visible mould growth: Mold in areas like bathrooms, basements, or near windows should be addressed without delay, as it poses significant health risks.
  • Dust accumulation: Excessive dust buildup on surfaces, especially shortly after cleaning, suggests that your filters, ducts, or ventilation systems may need servicing.
  • Stale air or drafts: If your indoor space feels stuffy or you experience noticeable temperature fluctuation, you may be dealing with poor ventilation, which, if not addressed, can lead to a buildup of indoor pollutants.

If you notice any of these symptoms, contact us for a comprehensive indoor air quality assessment. We can test the quality of the air in your home and then recommend an effective solution.

Tips for Improving Indoor Air Quality

Improving the quality of the air in your home is not just about addressing the symptoms we covered in the section above; it's about implementing proactive measures that foster a healthier environment for you and your family.

Here are some effective tips to consider for improving your home's indoor air quality, along with how our services can aid in this effort:

  • Regular duct cleaning: Over time, dust, allergens, and other debris can accumulate within your duct system, circulating throughout your home with every cycle of your HVAC system. Professional duct cleaning can significantly reduce these contaminants, promoting cleaner air circulation and improving the overall air quality in your home.
  • Manage humidity levels: A dehumidifier is a powerful tool that can transform your home's air quality by regulating humidity levels. By extracting excess moisture from the air, it inhibits the growth of harmful allergens, reduces allergy symptoms, and protects your home from moisture-related damage.
  • Invest in UV air purification: By harnessing the germicidal properties of ultraviolet light, these devices neutralize viruses, bacteria, mould spores, and other harmful microorganisms present in your home's air.
  • Clean dryer vents regularly: Clogged dryer vents are a major fire hazard due to the buildup of flammable lint. They also diminish the quality of your indoor air by trapping moisture and pollutants, hindering airflow and potentially releasing allergens back into your home. Our professional dryer vent cleaning service eliminates this buildup, helping your dryer operate safely and efficiently while improving your home's air.
  • Use natural cleaning products: By opting for plant-based, non-toxic cleaning alternatives, you can minimize your exposure to harmful chemicals.
